GM Recalls More Than 62,000 Vehicles Due To Fire Risk

General Motors has made an announcement for a major recall affecting  62,468 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks from model years 2019 through 2024 due to a potentially serious fire hazard. The recall has its major target on Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD trucks, as defects are revealed after investigation, like brake pressure assembly that could cause brake fluid to leak, which can cause electrical short circuits and an increased risk of fire.

What’s The Issue?

The root cause problem that led to recalls was in the brake pressure sensor that assembles a rubber diaphragm, which contains an unauthorised chemical mainly during the manufacturing process. This chemical reacts adversely with brake fluid that causing the diaphragm to degrade with time. As a result of this, brake fluid can leak into the brake pressure switch’s electrical components, which causes a short circuit. 

The short circuit can generate excessive heat while posing a fire risk both while driving and when the vehicle is parked and turned off.

1. Affected models: Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD
2. Model years: 2019 to 2024
3. Total vehicles recalled: 62,468
4. Most affected: 2023 Silverado 5500HD (approx. 10,097 units) and 2022 Silverado 5500HD (approx. 7,339 units)
5. Primary markets: United States and Canada, with the majority of vehicles in the U.S.

Background and Investigation

The recall made has followed a previous GM recall (NHTSA campaign 23V-266) that addresses brake fluid leaks but involves a different root cause. The current recall came into existence with the spark spread by new field reports starting in October 2024. This includes incidents that involve vehicles that are not covered by the earlier recall. The investigation held has uncovered 160 filed reports that are potentially related to this defect, including one alleged fire, though no accidents or injuries have been confirmed.

An independent lab analysis in April 2025 confirmed the degradation of the rubber diaphragm due to the unauthorised chemical. GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority approved the recall on June 5, 2025.

Safety Precautions and Repair Plan

As an immediate precaution, GM advises owners to park their Silverado trucks outdoors and away from buildings until all the repairs are made to minimise fire risks. Here, the remedy involves the replacement of the existing brake pressure switch wire harness with an improved version that includes a silicone sealant that prevents brake fluid leakage into electrical components. The updated part to be used for replacement has been under production since September 9, 2024. 

No charges will be made for the repairs to be made at authorised GM dealerships. Dealers were notified regarding the recall on June 12, 2025, and GM plans to begin mailing recall notices to owners starting July 28, 2025, followed by a second notification once parts are available.
