Polestar Recalls 3,665 Polestar 3 SUVs for Rear view Camera Glitch
· Sage Law Group, LLP
Polestar is recalling 3,665 Polestar 3 vehicles from the 2025 model year due to a software issue that disrupts the rearview camera display. The problem prevents the correct camera feed from showing when the car is shifted into reverse, which can create a safety hazard.
What’s the Problem?
When the vehicle is moving slowly after its last reverse maneuver, the system may fail to switch back to the rearview camera view. Instead, it may display a 3D or 360-degree image, or nothing at all. This is caused by a software bug in the infotainment system, not a hardware fault.
The glitch affects visibility when backing up and could increase the risk of an accident. Thankfully, there have been no reports of crashes or injuries.
How It Was Discovered?
- Feb 10, 2025: NHTSA flagged three complaints about rearview camera failures in Polestar 3 vehicles.
- Mar 25, 2025: Polestar met with NHTSA to review the issue.
- May 5, 2025: Polestar announced a voluntary recall.
This isn’t Polestar’s first software-related recall. Earlier, it recalled 28,000 Polestar 2s for similar camera and display issues. Volvo, Polestar’s parent company, has also recalled over 413,000 vehicles in the U.S. for related problems.
The Fix: Software Update
Polestar will resolve the issue through a software update:
- Over-the-Air (OTA) Update: Most owners can download the fix remotely.
- In-Dealer Installation: Available for those who prefer or need hands-on service.
Notification letters will be mailed by July 1, 2025, explaining how to install the update or schedule an appointment. Owners who previously paid for repairs may qualify for reimbursement.
