Thousands of Cadillac EVs Recalled Over A Feature Meant To Impress
· Sage Law Group, LLP
With the entrance into the market of electric vehicles, a great push is driven in Cadillac as it hit a significant bump as the automaker recalls thousands of its luxury EVs due to a malfunction in a high-profile feature designed to set the brand apart. The recall was made for the affected vehicles in 2023 and 2024, considering the Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq models, centred on the vehicles’ advanced illuminated front grille—a signature design element meant to impress, but now at the heart of safety and compliance issues.
Thousands of Cadillac EVs Recalled Over A Feature Meant To Impress
The feature that is thought to be an attractive feature of the vehicles becomes a problematic aspect for Cadillac. The illuminated grille, a bold styling cue intended to signal the brand’s EV future, uses a network of LED lights to create a dramatic visual effect. However, General Motors (GM) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claimed that the lighting system of the grill does not comply with the safety standards of federal motor vehicles regarding exterior lighting and glare.
The key issues that have been identified with the vehicle are excessive brightness as the grille’s LEDs emit light levels that exceed regulatory limits, which makes it difficult for oncoming drivers and increases the risk of accidents. In some cases, the lighting system has been reported to have issues like a short circuit, which causes flickering or complete failure of the grille illumination. Many owners have reported that the frill lights remain on even after the vehicle is turned off, which drains the battery and creates confusion.
The scope of the recall is for:-
- Models affected: 2023–2024 Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq EVs
- Number of vehicles: Approximately 12,800 units in the United States, with additional vehicles in Canada and select international markets
- Production period: Vehicles manufactured between March 2023 and May 2025
The recall is initiated after receiving more than 200 complaints from several customers and dealers regarding the grille lighting. Though no accidents or injuries are directly linked to the defect but the company is proactively addressing these issues so that it can maintain the trust of customers.
Cadillac dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and perform a software update to recalibrate the grille’s lighting output. In cases where hardware is found to be faulty, the entire grille assembly will be replaced at no cost to the owner. The automaker has also pledged to update its quality control processes for future EV models.
Owner Notification and Next Steps

It is advised to owners that they keep a check on their vehicle’s recall status using the NHTSA website or by contacting Cadillac customer service.
The recall is a setback for Cadillac’s efforts to position itself as a leader in luxury EVs, especially as the illuminated grille was heavily featured in marketing campaigns and touted as a symbol of innovation. The incident highlights the challenges automakers face in balancing cutting-edge design with regulatory compliance and real-world reliability.
A Cadillac spokesperson stated, “We are committed to the highest standards of safety and customer satisfaction. While the illuminated grille was designed to enhance the Cadillac EV experience, we are taking swift action to address this issue and ensure our vehicles meet all safety requirements.”
The things that owners should consider are-
- Check the recall status via NHTSA or Cadillac’s website.
- Schedule a service appointment if your vehicle is affected.
- Report any unusual lighting behaviour to your dealer immediately.
As Cadillac and other manufacturers race to innovate in the EV space, this recall serves as a reminder that even the most impressive features must meet rigorous safety and reliability standards. Cadillac’s swift response and commitment to customer care will be crucial in maintaining its reputation as it continues to electrify its lineup.
