The BMW X3 offers an edgy style, and this turned out to be one of the best compact luxury SUVs around. But now, it is in the list of recalls. This recall covers 36,922 X3 models of the years 2025 and 2026 due to the potential alarming fault in the steering wheel, which jerks violently like a glitch in a racing simulator.
36,922 BMW SUVs Recalled Over A Steering Wheel Issue
The recall campaign number 25V857 impacted X3 30 xDrive and X3 M50 xDrive variants, which were manufactured between August 14, 2024, and October 20, 2025. Although the issue is only detected when the vehicle is not moving, BMW notes that this unexpected steering input could startle the driver. It potentially increases the risk of a crash or accident.
As of now, BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries, but 21 field reports have been submitted related to the issue. As per the automaker, the fault lies in the steering system software of the X3, where the module might fail and is unable to detect the malfunction in the steering torque sensor when the vehicle is stationary, such as at startup or when the vehicle is stopped in drive mode. Also, in some of the rare cases, this can happen in unintended steering wheel movement without driver input.
Chronology:
- The automaker first got to know about the steering wheel problem at its vehicle assembly plant on August 22, 2025. And from 1st September, they started an engineering review. After review and reports, they announced a voluntary recall on December 4, 2025.
- But before that, they reviewed assembly information and supplier production records to know the exact manufacturing dates of the vehicles.
- They have not received any report, nor any case of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
- All the dealers are already aware of the situation, and by Feb 2, 2026, the owners will be notified.
In their remedy process, the automaker recommended updating the vehicle via an over-the-air process by updating the steering system software, as this will allow the vehicle to update quickly without the need for any additional time. But it is necessary to take cars to the authorised dealers only.
