Audi Recalls 44,000 Vehicles for Digital Instrument Panel Failure
· Sage Law Group, LLP
Audi is recalling over 44,000 vehicles from the 2021 model year due to a software issue that can cause the digital instrument cluster to shut down while driving. This glitch cuts off access to key information like speed, RPM, gear position, and mileage—all vital for safe operation.
What’s Causing the Problem?
The issue stems from a flex-foil cable that powers Audi’s virtual cockpit display. Over time, the cable can degrade and build up resistance, disrupting the power supply. When this happens, the display may flicker or go completely dark while the vehicle is moving.
Although 2,285 complaints have been logged, there are no reports of crashes or injuries.
Affected Models
The recall affects several 2021 Audi vehicles:
Sedans & Wagons
- A6, A7, A8
- RS 6 Avant, RS 7
- S6, S7, S8
- A6 Allroad
SUVs
- Q7, Q8
- RS Q8
- SQ7, SQ8
Investigation Timeline
- Sept–Oct 2024: Audi and Bosch began investigating customer complaints.
- Nov 2024: Bosch confirmed the issue was linked to early production cables.
- Dec 2024–Feb 2025: Volkswagen validated the findings through in-house testing.
- March 24, 2025: Audi approved the recall and a software fix.
The Fix: Software Update
Audi will issue a software update that ensures key dashboard functions stay active even if the flex cable fails. This update is free and applies regardless of warranty status.
Audi also confirmed that improved cables have been in use since July 2021 for the 2022 models.
